Subject Headings – Books for Children
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
This project was my first experience organizing a set of reference points for a particular audience – in this case, caretakers of children. While putting this project together, our group considered specific concepts – both concrete and abstract – that caretakers might look for when choosing books for their children. For instance, we included the term "Confidence" for caretakers who may want to introduce or reinforce the notion of confidence to their children. More concrete terms, by contrast, might reflect a child's existing interests. If a child's favorite animal is a platypus, for instance, their caretaker could refer to this subject headings list to determine that a platypus plays a prominent role in the book Pete the Cat and the New Guy.
